| In the mid 1950's,
Arthur J. Barratt worked as a salesman in the Los Angeles area.
He loved driving the freeway system so much he decided to take
it home. Barratt filmed several journeys along the highways with
his new Super 8mm camera, but when he projected the result, he
found the films didn't last long enough. A friend who worked
as a sound engineer suggested making film loops. These were made
by joining the ends of a length of film together to form a continuous
loop, then running this through the projector and out around
a pencil shaft fixed several yards away, to retain tension. If
you choose an edit point carefully, you can't easily see the
join and the film appears to go on forever. Barratt purchased
four projectors so he could have the loops playing on each wall
of his large living room. When a film became worn, he simply
shot another. Over the years he created a great number of these
loops. Most were in a fairly fragile state when Arnold began
to acquire them, so digital archive copies have been made for
showings. Barratt of course had already taken to digital technology
with complete enthusiasm. Long retired, and now equipped with
computer software and large plasma screens, he recently made
his 1000th loop of LA freeway. |
